Headline numbers sell subscriptions, and Alpha Picks has a striking one. Seeking Alpha reports that its model portfolio rose +356.93% from inception on July 1, 2022 through October 9, 2026, while the S&P 500 gained +106.24% over the same dates. That is roughly three and a half times the index's return. This article asks the follow-up questions a careful investor should: who measured it, what drove it, and what it implies for someone joining now.

## The record in one place

- Reported portfolio gain: +356.93%.
- S&P 500 over identical dates: +106.24%.
- Window: July 1, 2022 to October 9, 2026.
- New picks: two a month.
- Source universe: stocks holding a Strong Buy quant rating for 75 days in a row.

## Who measures it

The company publishes these figures for the whole portfolio since launch, closed positions included. We are not aware of an independent audit. That does not make the numbers wrong; it means they are a claim made by the seller, which deserves respect and scepticism in equal measure. Past results never promise future ones.

## The selection engine

The knowledge base lists the rules each candidate must pass:

- A Strong Buy quant rating for at least 75 consecutive days.
- US common stock only; no ADRs.
- No REITs.
- A three-month average market value above $500 million.
- A share price above $10.
- Not selected within the previous year.

One name is added on the first trading day of each month and another on or after the 15th. Members receive Hold and Sell alerts when ratings change. A full walkthrough sits in [how Alpha Picks works](https://finpins.ghost.io/how-does-alpha-picks-work/).

## Why your result will not match

**Entry dates.** Someone joining in late 2026 does not inherit 2022 prices. Your return starts when you buy.

**Selectivity.** Skipping some picks, or buying days after publication, changes outcomes.

**Position sizes.** The reported portfolio uses its own approach; uneven sizing produces different results.

**Taxes.** Acting on Sell alerts in a taxable account can create capital-gains bills that the headline number ignores.

## Concentration

A portfolio of a few dozen names can be carried by a small number of large winners. That is how many high-return strategies work, but it means swings can be much larger than an index, in both directions. If two or three standouts reverse, the overall figure can fall quickly.

## The period matters

The track record starts close to the 2022 market low and runs through a strong recovery. Different conditions may suit different factors, so a future four-year window could look very different.

Research every pick yourself

The knowledge base quotes $718 for the first year of Premium plus Alpha Picks, versus $798 separately.

## The fee hurdle

At $449, the fee equals about 4.5% of a $10,000 stock allocation; the picks must beat the market by that much before you are ahead of simply buying an index fund. On $50,000 it is 0.9%, and on $100,000 it is 0.45%. Larger allocations make the arithmetic far kinder. We work through more examples in [is Alpha Picks worth it](https://finpins.ghost.io/is-alpha-picks-worth-it/), and current pricing is covered in [the Alpha Picks discount page](https://finpins.ghost.io/alpha-picks-discount/).

## Reading member updates

Subscribers receive regular performance reports. Look beyond the total: how many current picks are ahead of the index since their own entry date, how much of the gain comes from the top three names, and how closed positions performed. Because members can see every pick, this analysis is straightforward.

## Comparisons with rivals

Each stock-picking service measures itself differently, which makes like-for-like comparison tricky. Our [Alpha Picks vs Stock Advisor](https://finpins.ghost.io/alpha-picks-vs-motley-fool-stock-advisor/) piece explains the differences.

## Three member profiles

**Large allocation.** Ruth invests $150,000 in individual stocks; the fee is 0.3% of that.

**Small account.** Kai has $5,000; the fee is about 9%, a steep hurdle.

**Late joiner.** Noor buys only new picks from October 2026; her return depends entirely on what happens from here.

## Who should skip it

Investors with small stock allocations, those who prefer index funds, and anyone who would abandon the strategy after a year of lagging.

## A simple way to benchmark your own results

When you join, open a spreadsheet with four columns: pick, purchase date, purchase price and the S&P 500's level on the same date. Each month, update current prices and the index level. Calculate the return on each pick and the return the index would have delivered on the same money over the same dates. After six months you will know, using your own numbers, whether the service is adding value for you. That is far more meaningful than any since-inception headline.

## What a bad year might look like

Concentrated strategies can lag the index for extended stretches. A year in which a few big holdings fall while the broad market rises is entirely possible. Decide in advance whether you would keep following the strategy through such a period; investors who abandon a system after a weak spell often miss its recovery.

## How fees and taxes change the picture

Subtract the subscription fee and any capital-gains taxes from your returns before comparing with an index fund. Doing so gives the honest number.

## Key takeaways

- Reported: +356.93% versus +106.24% for the S&P 500 over just over four years.
- Self-reported, concentrated and period-specific.
- Your own returns depend on entry dates, sizing and taxes.
- The fee is easiest to justify on larger stock allocations.
- Track your own results against an index fund bought on the same days; after a year, that comparison, net of the fee, is the only verdict that really matters for your money and your decision to renew.
